In January 2015 I was accepted into a 6 month placement at Bausch & Lomb’s manufacturing plant in Waterford. During this time I was able to put the skills I had developed through college into practice in a busy multi functioning complex. I worked with the R&D department in performing an operational qualification on a new prototype monomer fill machine to produce toric contact lenses. I participated in and performed many aspects of the OQ myself, specifically the verification of two different sets of monomer pumps and a verification of the capping profile during recombination of the moulds. During this time I was trained in GMP necessary to work in clean room environments. Regular department meetings ensured I established and maintained a high level of professional conduct at all times. Interning at B&L also allowed me to further develop my communication abilities through the coordination of various in house departments with third party companies. Upon returning to complete my final year in college I was able to implement many of the analytical and procedural skills I had learned at B&L to carry out my fourth year project. I chose a project titled “An investigation into the Doppler dynamic range performance of a range of Ultrasound systems”. I developed a protocol and flow phantom test device to determine the Doppler dynamic range of three ultrasound systems using different concentrations of scattering particles suspended in blood mimicking fluid. The combination of practical laboratory skills developed in college and my experience from working at B&L allowed me to achieve a grade of 68% on my final thesis.
